June 6, 1944, thousands of Allie troops were behind enemy lines securing road exits and bridges. They wanted to capture the French beaches. By days end, approximately 156,000 allied troops successfully stormed on Normandy's beaches. More than 4,000 Allie troops lost their lives.
Allied troops moved across Europe and began to encounter a concentration camp prisoners. Many prisoners survived. They suffered from starvation and disease. Soviet soldiers were the first to approach a Nazi camp near Lublin, Poland, in July 1944. The soviets then liberated Auschwitz, the largest killing concentration camp in January 1945.
